In the heart of La Boca, La Bombonera has been Boca Juniors' home since 25 May 1940. Opened with a 2-0 win over San Lorenzo, it was designed by architect Viktor Sulčič with a vertical structure and a distinctive horseshoe shape. That layout brings the stands right up to the pitch. A historical frieze inside the ground recalls, among other moments, Diego Maradona's first steps in the blue and gold shirt in 1981.
The Museo de la Pasión Boquense tells the story of Boca Juniors and is visited at your own pace. It opens every day from 10 am to 6 pm, with last admission at 5.30 pm. Two options also take you inside the stadium: a ten-minute express visit from the panoramic viewpoint in the southern popular stand, and a fifty-minute guided tour taking in the stands, the boxes and the edge of the pitch.
Did you know?
La Bombonera is the stadium where Maradona, El Pibe de Oro (the Golden Boy), hung up his boots for good, during a magnificent testimonial match in 2001. Boca Juniors is the club that saw the legend of Argentine football both rise and fade. It was indeed in Boca's blue and gold that Maradona won his first Argentine league title in 1981, and there that he bid farewell to professional football 16 years later, on 25 October 1997, on the pitch of... River Plate. A symbol in itself.
