Tres grand stade pour un très grand club.
Since 2017, the Riyadh Air Metropolitano has been the home of Atlético Madrid, taking over from the Vicente Calderón. Built out of the former La Peineta and designed by Cruz y Ortiz, it holds more than 70,000 spectators and staged the 2019 Champions League final.
The tour runs from the circular dressing room to the directors' box, taking in the mixed zone, the players' tunnel, the bench and the press room. Allow about an hour for the stadium itself, plus another hour for the museum. Museum opening hours change with the time of year and on matchdays or event days.
Sole owner of the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Atlético de Madrid did not, in the end, have to empty its coffers to secure the ground: the redevelopment of the arena was largely funded by the property deal struck on the land of the Vicente Calderón, the club's former home. A textbook case of turning the old into the new. Shrewd.
